Washington's climate is a humid subtropical climate with four different seasons. Summer tends to be hot and humid, with daily high temperatures in July and August averaging between 30 and 33 ° C (which would equal between 85 and 95 ° F).

The combination of heat and humidity in the summer attracts frequent thunderstorms, some of which occasionally produce tornadoes in the area. Spring and fall are mild, with high temperatures in April and October averaging 20 ° C (approximately 65-75 ° F). Winter features cool temperatures and occasional snowfall.

From mid-December to mid-February, the highest average temperatures tend to be around 6 to 8 ° C and the lowest between –5 and –2 ° C.

The distance to the Chesapeake Bay makes the city colder in winter than other cities further north, such as Baltimore. While tropical cyclones (or their remnants) occasionally pass through the area in late summer and early fall, they have usually weakened by the time they reach Washington, in part thanks to the city's inland location.

However, the overflow of the Potomac River - caused by a combination of high tide, storm surge and a series of storms - is well known for causing extensive property damage in Georgetown and Alexandria, Virginia .21 22 Spring is generally the mildest time of the year, with low humidity, mild temperatures, and flourishing foliage. This period generally lasts from the end of March to the middle of May. The temperature in the Dulles airport area and in the western and southern suburbs is on average 3 ° C cooler than in Washington.
